They Served as Teacher/Leader!

“This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he was speaking and teaching accurately the things concerning Jesus, being acquainted only with the baptism of John; and he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.”

Acts 18:25-26

I think back to the time I had just given my life to Christ. I was excited and eager to go to work for God. I had read the Bible at least twice but with no understanding of what it meant. I begin to attend Sunday School, and hearing the teachers expounding on the scriptures made me want to teach, as well. I later had a conversation with the Sunday School director, and he agreed to help me to study more.

Little did I know, he would purchase me my first Bible dictionary and a Greek and Hebrew study Bible. We would meet every Thursday night where he would teach me how to study the scriptures. For me, he was the perfect example of what Priscilla and Aquila did for Apollos in Acts 18:24-26. Here was a fiery Jew who was sincere about preaching the gospel, but he was not totally knowledgeable of what he was preaching. As leaders in the church, they made the decision to pull him aside (maybe to not embarrass him) to equip him more to share the gospel. They recognized that he was worth the time and effort for the advancement of the gospel.

This was their (Priscilla and Aquila) way of performing what was stated in Ephesians 4:12: “the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ.”

As we lead our Sunday School classes each Sunday, we should be alert to members who have the potential and desire to be an“Apollo.” We must be ready to step in and show them the “way of theLord” more accurately. Every Sunday School class is a place to become and be a part of the community of Christians. I will always be thankful for that one director who invested in me to help start me on my journey as a Christian. I just pray that when the time comes I will be able to return the favor to another brother or sister in need.
